St.Michael’s Church School

Achieving a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.

St Michael's is a new build and rapidly growing school at the heart of the new community on the Cardea housing estate in Peterborough. It is a Voluntary Aided Church School in the Ely Diocese.

The Challenge

Work at St. Michael’s was as much a pleasure as a challenge. The school now has fantastic facilities including eight classrooms, a large main hall, library, kitchen and medical facilities. The specific challenge for us was to achieve the BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’. BREEAM is the world’s leading sustainability assessment method, so we rose to their challenge and we are proud to confirm that the building is now formally classified ‘Excellent’. St. Michael’s has a ‘green’ or ‘living’ roof which not only looks fabulous but also absorbs rainwater and provides efficient insulation. The roof has its own irrigation system. Renewable technologies installed were PV panels providing electricity and Solar Thermal panels for the provision of hot water.

The Outcome

The school is already home to more than 240 pupils and is established as an integral part of the community. It is a vibrant and stimulating environment and is also widely used by many local clubs and societies outside of school hours.

A great project for a great school.
