Yaxley Fire Station

yaxley

A £1m, out of the ordinary redevelopment project.

The original fire station at Yaxley, a small village in Cambridgeshire, dates back to 1878 and parts of the original building are listed. Our clients, Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service, needed to transform an “out of date and unpractical” station into something contemporary, functional and fit for an essential purpose.

The Challenge

The challenge lay in the listed classification of elements of the building, its’ setting in a picturesque village in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and of course, in maintaining the total reliability of a critical service. Regulatory standards had to be exceeded not simply met and we had to deliver a building that was highly energy efficient and easy to run and maintain. The listed original façade of the station was retained, the rest of the premises demolished enabling the construction of a new station incorporating additional training, administrative and welfare facilities. Our role was full Mechanical and Electrical Design and Project Management.

The Outcome

Yaxley Fire Station reopened in the Autumn of 2016 and Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue are delighted with their new facility. It looks great too. Partly zinc clad it compliments and sits comfortably among the historic buildings of the lovely Yaxley High Street.
